Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a Boerboel and what kind of breed is it?
The Boerboel is a large, powerful working breed originating from South Africa, originally developed to guard farms. It is a confident, stable, and loyal dog that thrives with clear boundaries and consistent leadership.
A Boerboel is devoted to its family but requires structure and responsibility from its owner.
2. Why choose a puppy from us?
We have over a decade of experience with the breed.
Our breeding program is based on original working lines, health-tested parents, strong breed type, and balanced temperament. Our puppies are raised as part of our family life, giving them a solid foundation for the future.
3. How do you health test your dogs?
All our breeding dogs undergo official hip, elbow, and spine x-rays, heart auscultation, eye and knee examinations.
We also test females for vaginal hyperplasia and males for testicular defects.
All our dogs are DNA tested (Embark or Wisdom Panel), and officially cleared for epilepsy.
In addition to health testing, we closely observe our dogs’ behavior, structure, and lineage.
Health, stable temperament, and preserving the integrity of the breed are always our top priorities.
4. How are the puppies socialized?
Our puppies are raised in the heart of our home, surrounded by everyday life.
From birth, they are handled and cared for daily. As they grow, we introduce them gradually to different people, animals, surfaces, sounds, and experiences — always in a safe and age-appropriate way.
Our goal is to build confidence, curiosity, and trust that will carry into adult life.
5. How much does a Boerboel cost?
The price depends on the pairing and the puppy’s intended role (e.g. companion, breeding, or co-owned placement).
But the puppy is just the beginning — a large breed like the Boerboel requires quality food, consistent training, and proper care.
What matters most is the long-term commitment. We are happy to help you evaluate whether the Boerboel is truly the right breed for you.
6. When is the next litter planned?
We update our website with upcoming litter plans as soon as the timeline is confirmed.
You’re also welcome to contact us directly if you’d like more information or wish to reserve a spot on the waiting list in advance.
7. What kind of home suits a Boerboel?
A Boerboel needs an owner who is consistent, confident, and willing to be actively involved in the dog's life.
The breed is best suited for a home with a fenced yard and enough space to move freely.
Mental stimulation, training, and regular physical activity are essential to keeping a Boerboel balanced and happy.
8. Can I come meet your dogs?
If you’ve filled out our puppy questionnaire and are on the waiting list, you are warmly welcome to visit us and meet our dogs by appointment.
Otherwise, we currently do not accept casual visits due to the busy nature of everyday life with young children.
However, you can meet our dogs and offspring at various events and training activities we participate in — follow us on social media to stay updated on where we’ll be!
9. How do you support your puppies' new homes?
Each puppy leaves us with a comprehensive puppy package, guides, and written instructions.
We are always available for support — throughout the dog’s entire life.
For us as breeders, responsibility doesn’t end at the moment of handover.
Our puppy owners also have access to an active WhatsApp group where they can ask questions, share experiences, and stay connected with us and other owners.
10. Can I buy Tuebor’s puppy guides even if I don’t have a puppy from you?
Yes! Our guides are available to all dog owners.
They are written in a practical, easy-to-understand way and are especially suitable as a first-time dog owner's guide — including for families with children.
You can find links to our online store on our website.
11. Do you test your dogs' temperament?
Yes. Tuebor Boerboels is actively involved in developing a breed-specific temperament test together with the Finnish Boerboel Association. This test focuses on qualities that are especially important for the Boerboel, such as courage, working ability, and confidence.
We test all our own dogs and closely follow the temperament development of their offspring. For us, the Boerboel is not just about looks — temperament is the foundation of everything.
We also evaluate all puppies before they leave, using the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test to help ensure that each pup is matched with the right home.
12. Do you sell black Boerboels?
No, we do not. Tuebor Boerboels breeds only original and historically documented colors, such as fawn, red, brindle, Irish marked, and piebald — occasionally also diluted versions of these (which are sold as pets only).
Solid black is not part of the Boerboel’s original gene pool and has no verified historical background prior to the 2000s.
Our breeding program is focused on preserving the breed as it was meant to be: functional, balanced, and true to its roots.
13. What is your relationship with Finnish Boerboel Association?
We have been actively involved with the Finnish Boerboel Association (Suomen Boerboelit ry) since its founding in 2015.
The association operates independently and collaborates with breeders, enthusiasts, and other organizations — with the shared goal of preserving the original Boerboel as a healthy and functional breed.
Tuebor is fully committed to this work and takes part in breeding advisory, events, and the development of the breed both in Finland and internationally.
14. Do you sell dogs abroad?
Yes. We have exported dogs to various countries, and we are happy to discuss international placements case by case. The same expectations apply regardless of location: a suitable home, a committed owner, and ongoing contact with us.
15. What does responsible breeding mean to you?
To us, responsible breeding means honest, health-focused, and well-planned decisions. It means putting the dogs first — always.
We evaluate temperament, health, functionality, and structure holistically, not just on paper. Our goal is to leave the breed better than we found it.
16. Do you recommend other Boerboel breeders?
Yes, when we know their dogs and breeding practices. We collaborate with other responsible breeders and are happy to refer to those who share our values. We don't support backyard breeders or volume-based operations.
