The Boerboel in Everyday Life - Alert and Always Ready

14/08/2025

The Boerboel is much more than a large and powerful molosser. It's an intelligent, loyal companion that lives in sync with its family, notices everything, and reacts when it's truly needed. In our daily life, this shows in countless ways – sometimes in small gestures, sometimes in remarkable actions.

Different Personalities Under One Roof
Even within the same breed, each Boerboel has its own way of guarding and caring for the family.
Ariel, the oldest in our pack and the grandfather of our current dogs, has always been highly territorial. His guarding instinct has been strong throughout his life. These days, he leaves most of the active patrols to the younger generation, but his sharp eyes and ears are still very much present.
Imara follows almost every step you take – much like her grandmother Shaina did – but she also carries a touch of her father Mosa’s independence.
The youngsters may look deeply engaged in play, but their eyes and ears are always alert.
Lelantos is always where the owner is – just like his mother Paris. For him, the best place is right beside you, where he can see and feel everything what's happening in the family.

Guarding Instinct Runs in the Family
Jelani is often the first to notice if something isn't quite right. His strong guarding instinct is inherited from his grandfather Ariel, who in his younger days took pride in keeping both the property and the family safe. One will alert, another will check – and no matter where the dog is, it will be at the right spot in seconds.
Some might think a bark is unnecessary. Here, it's not. We live in an area where wolves, lynxes, raccoon dogs, and foxes pass through. What may sound like a small thing can be something else entirely.

When a Dog Tells a Story
Shaina, Imara's grandmother, once barked and stared straight at the sky. When we followed her gaze, the Northern Lights were dancing above us. No danger, but something unusual – and in Shaina's mind, worth pointing out.

Another memorable moment came from the quietest dog in our pack – one that rarely makes a sound. One evening, she stood facing the old barn and let out a deep, low guarding bark. Moments later, we heard the unmistakable sound of a lynx calling from behind the barn. That's when you realize why the bark came.

Always in the Right Place
Whether a Boerboel is in the forest, on the backyard sofa, in the front yard field, or near the front door, it's instantly present if something happens. And there's always a Boerboel at the gate – whether you're coming home as family, arriving as a guest, or just passing by. Before you even step out of the car, someone is already checking who you are and if everything is in order.

Personalities May Vary – The Goal is the Same
A Boerboel can be calm and thoughtful or active and energetic. One stays close by your side, another watches from a distance, and a third reacts in the middle of play.No matter the style, they all share the same mission: to care for the home and the people in it.
