The Boerboel

A powerful farm dog with clear purpose and a strong connection to it's people.

The Boerboel is a unique dog, combining strength, intelligence, loyalty, and a deep connection to its family.

It is not a breed for everyone.
But in the right hands, it is a stable, dependable companion that becomes strongly attached to its people.

Origin and purpose

The name comes from Dutch: boer meaning farmer and boel meaning dog.
The Boerboel was developed in South Africa as a farm dog, bred to protect property and family.
Even today, its original purpose is clearly visible in the breed.

A working dog at heart

The Boerboel is deeply devoted to its family and highly aware of its surroundings.
It is confident and capable, but not unnecessarily aggressive.
A good Boerboel observes, evaluates, and reacts only when needed.
At the same time, it is often sensitive and strongly connected to its people, seeking closeness and security within the family.

Structure and movement

The Boerboel is a powerful, muscular, and well-balanced dog.
Males are typically around 66 cm and females around 61 cm, but correct proportions and balance are always more important than size alone.
Despite its strength, the Boerboel should be agile and capable of efficient movement.
It must be able to react quickly and function in demanding environments.

Temperament and everyday life

The Boerboel requires clear guidance, consistency, and training.
It is intelligent and learns quickly, but it also needs structure.
Without it, the dog may start making its own decisions.
This is not a dog that should be kept separate from everyday life.
It thrives when it is part of the family and included in daily routines.

Not for everyone

The Boerboel is a strong, self-confident breed.
It may not be naturally social with unfamiliar dogs, especially those of the same sex.
Dog parks are rarely the right environment.
This is a breed that requires understanding, commitment, and the ability to read the dog.

Socialisation and early development

Early socialisation is essential.
As puppies, Boerboels are curious and adaptable, and early experiences shape how they develop as adults.
Exposure to different environments, people, and situations helps build a stable and balanced dog.
Calm, well-adjusted adult dogs also play an important role in teaching younger ones.

Life with a Boerboel

Boerboels are not just guard dogs.
They are family dogs that want to be involved, present, and connected.
They do not do well if left isolated without human interaction.
Frustration can lead to unwanted behaviour.

The breed and its future

We have a strong respect for the work of earlier, old-school breeders who built the foundation of the Boerboel.
Over the years, we have been in contact with experienced breeders, and their knowledge and perspective have influenced how we approach the breed today.
Preserving the original purpose, strength, and balance of the Boerboel is important.
The Boerboel is more than a breed.
It is a companion, a guardian, and a reflection of its owner.
For the right person, it offers loyalty, presence, and a deep connection that few breeds can match.
